10/22-23: Arizona's Ultimate Women's Expo in Phoenix - AZCentral.com

by Jessica Testa - Oct. 18, 2011 11:43 AM Special for The Republic The Arizona's Ultimate Women's Expo isn't just a girls' day out - it's a girls' day out on steroids. The two-day expo will swarm the Phoenix Convention Center this weekend, bringing with it more than 500 booths of clothes, candy, pedicures and manicures, self-help workshops on weight loss and career building, and kooky seminars on lap dancing and online dating. Makeovers and cooking demonstrations abound, and Home Depot will offer "Do It Herself" lessons. "The expo is about living your best life and making the most of where you are now," spokeswoman Jane Sands said. The Ultimate Women's Expo also has stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Dallas, but Phoenix was the pamper-friendly convention's first city when it launched four years ago. "Phoenix has always been our favorite," Sands said. "The women are more welcoming, more energetic, more appreciativ...

Back to home page Printable version of this story ANGEL FIRE, N.M., Jan. 8, 2011, 4:31 p.m. ET (UPDATED) -- Like so many Americans, the 22-year-old man, Jared Lee Loughner, identified as the shooter of Tucson, Ariz., Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others this morning at a constituent event outside a Safeway store, had a Facebook profile. But it may have been created by a right-wing hacker who wanted to pin blame for the shooting on the far left. The real Jared Loughner apparently posted a message at 5 a.m. on MySpace, a social networking site owned by FoxNews magnate Rupert Murdoch, saying goodbye and apparently asking for forgiveness for what he was about to do. Loughner did have a MySpace account, according to a report in the Arizona Daily Star. he used to say "Goodbye," and "Please don't hate me" in posts at 5 a.m....

Britney Spears Has 10 Million Twitter Followers - The Moderate Voice

That Huffington Post headline was the lead for one of its many celebrity stories that I noticed this morning. I admit to perusing HuffPo a few times a week to give balance to my daily readings of various Internet news blogs. One savvy woman creatively used the free content from many talented writers to make herself a multi-millionaire beyond what she had achieved through her earlier divorce proceedings. I only wish TMVs Joe Gandelman didnt have to do other work to pay his familys living expenses but then I havent pulled my far-less-than-Governor-Christie weight in posting over this past year either. Living in Arizona (which is currently on Pacific Time that includes WA, OR, NV & CA La-La-Land where a total of 18% of all Americans live) everything happens well after the fact for us compared to the rest of the U.S. Im sure that information was already published in one of the many supermarket celebrity tabloids that continue to defy the overall trajectory of self-implosion for most ...

Luminous grains of sand determine year of historic storm flood - Terra Daily

Scientists at TU Delft have successfully matched a layer of sediment from the dunes near Heemskerk to a severe storm flood that occurred in either 1775 or 1776. This type of information helps us gain more insight into past storm floods and predict future surges more accurately. The scientists' findings have been published in the online edition of the scientific magazine Geology, and will be on the cover of the paper edition of November. Historic knowledge Our historic knowledge about storm floods (and water levels) on the Dutch coast is relatively limited. Records were not kept consistently until the late nineteenth century. This is unfortunate, because the limited historical archive makes it difficult to formulate statistical conclusions and predictions about future storm floods. It is also harder for us to establish whether storm floods are becoming more severe over the years. Heemskerk With the support of Technology Foundation STW and in cooperation with scientists from the Ge...

Internet Privacy: Websites are Tracking User Information, Study Reports - Int'l Business Times

A new study released on Tuesday shows that many top websites are sharing personal user information to at least four other websites. At least 45 percent of the top 185 most-visited websites share user information like user name or user ID with another website. The study by Jonathan Meyer, a graduate student in law and computer science in Stanford University concludes that users have no idea that websites are regularly sharing personal information between them. "Many first-party websites and third parties make what would appear to be incorrect representations about not sharing or collecting 'personally identifiable information,'" Mayer said in a written statement. The study also shows that websites don't just trade information about user ID or user name but shares more personal information including gender, age, ZIP code and relationship status through referrers. An example in the study is the dating website OKCupid which shared the gender, age and relationship stat...

A New Term For Cookies and Online Trackers: The 'Cyberazzi' - Forbes

Image
The FTC chair suggests you have something in common with Demi Moore The chair of the Federal Trade Commission was pushing hard to get attendees at a privacy forum this morning to add a new term to their Internet lexicon: the cyberazzi. Chair Jon Leibowitz used the word to describe the cookies and data catchers that follow us around the Web, taking snapshots of our activity on various websites. Instead of being bought up by Star, US Weekly, and the National Inquirer, these snapshots are used to create profiles purchased by marketing companies and other data broker customers. I hate to tell you, but the cyberazzi may be flashing away, even as you read this. At the same privacy forum, Stanford graduate student Jonathan Mayer presented a new study that examined 250 websites to see which ones were leaking user information to third parties. Forbes.com made the list. Mayers study revealed that Forbes sent visitors usernames along to more than a dozen third-parties, such as data broker Blue K...

By Julia Angwin, Wall Street Journal A study released Tuesday shows that 45% of the top 185 U.S. websites transmit identifying details about their visitors to at least four outside websites. The data transmitted was primarily a username which is the name a person uses to log into a website or a user ID assigned by the website to a user. It was usually transmitted through referrers which is information about the web page transmitted automatically. In some cases, the data went much further: the study found for instance that the online dating website OKCupid sent the gender, age, zip code, relationship status and drug use frequency to two companies that sell personal data in auctions, BlueKai and Lotame. Lotame confirmed that is has a data licensing relationship with OKCupid, but said it does not use data in the drug use category. BlueKai told Digits that it does not buy or sell data attributes like drug use frequency from OKCupid. We...

GHOST WRITERS IN THE SKY - American Reporter

Make My Day GHOST WRITERS IN THE SKY by Erik Deckers American Reporter Humor Writer Indianapolis, Indiana Back to home page Printable version of this story INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- I'm a ghost writer. Other people hire me to write stuff for them, but they get to put their name on it. I've ghost-written blog posts, brochures, press releases, Websites, and half a book. It's an odd career choice, especially when you consider that if you did this in high school or college, it was cheating and you could be expelled for it. I'd like to say that's why I turned down a guy in college who asked me to write his paper for $10. But in truth, I turned him down because it was a Thursday night, I was going to a party, and I wasn't changing my plans for 10 lousy bucks. (He wouldn't go any higher either, so I didn't feel bad when I left him with his stack of books and a pad of paper.) Ghost writing is usually considered a reputable, if mostly anonymous and thankless, job. G...
