Alleged serial rapist in custody of Jones County authorities - Laurel Leader-Call
LAUREL Sheriff Alex Hodge held a press conference this morning in the Jones County Circuit Court Room to discuss details surrounding the extradition of accused serial rapist Miguel Oros from Mexico to the United States.
U.S. Marshals extradited Oros from Mexico to the United States on Tuesday and the Jones County Sheriffs Department took custody of Oros late Wednesday evening in Gulfport.
Oros had been in the custody of the Mexican Government since May 19, 2010. He was indicted in October of 2009 for the sexual assaults of five Jones County women dating back to 2005. Those assaults were also linked to assaults in Meridian, and New Iberia, La.
In late 2009, Jones County Investigators, Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations, and the Jones County District Attorneys Office began working with the United States Department of Justice in securing a Provisional Arrest Warrant for Oros after it was learned Oros, a Mexican National Citizen, left the U.S. for Mexico. In May of 2010, the Mexican Government granted the Provisional Arrest Warrant request. Oros was arrested by Mexican Federal Agents on May 19, 2010 near Cancun, Mexico, added Major Robbie Suber.
Hodge said, Although the process was lengthy, those involved in the investigation remained faithful that Oros would see his day in a Jones County courtroom. The Jones County Sheriffs Department would like to extend its gratitude to the Mexican law enforcement officials involved in locating and arresting Oros as well as the Judicial officers involved in the extradition of Oros back to the United States.
The victims and their families deserve to see justice served, and today we are one step closer to justice. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to these ladies and their families. They have been the inspiration in this journey.
