Facebook threats lead to court order - CBC Olympics

A 14-year-old girl in St. John's has had a peace bond issued against another girl following Facebook threats that left the girl fearing for her safety.

The 14-year-old, who said she was at times afraid to leave her home, was in court Tuesday where Judge Robert Hyslop issued the peace bond. It contains a no contact order that includes Facebook.

The online threats and insults began when the boyfriend of one girl lost interest in her, and began dating the other girl.

It began with insults posted on Facebook, and elevated to threats, said the girl, "to the point that she posted a status that said she wanted me dead, and she'd spit on my grave."

The girl's mother told reporters outside court that the family had no choice but to go to court since the police said they couldn't do anything.

"We called the [Royal Newfoundland Constabulary] and the RNC came in and said basically that until they actually assault her, they can't do anything," said the girl's mother.

The mother said she had seen this happen to her daughter before, and didn't want the same thing to happen again. The previous incident also started with threats, ending with the girl being assaulted.

"We don't want it to escalate to the point that it had prior, where my daughter got jumped with her four-year-old sister with her," said the mom. "She couldn't go outside her door. She couldn't, she basically became a hermit and wouldn't even go to school."

The other girl, who didn't show up, now has a warrant for her arrest.

When the two girls return to school in the fall, they will be attending the same school.
