Taylor Swift concert at Van Andel Arena tops Gonzo's Guide - MLive.com

Taylor SwiftPress File PhotoCountry darling: Taylor Swift will perform a soldout show Thursday at Van Andel Arena.

Can it be that July is almost over? Is the summer already slipping away? No way. Get out there and do something. Here are five suggestions:

5. Grandwich. Nicole Infante presented the idea at Marchs 5x5 night to come up with Grand Rapids signature sandwich. Her idea did not win the top prize that night, but it caught the attention of the Downtown Alliance, and Grandwich was born. Through July 31, sandwich lovers can visit participating restaurants, try out their entry and then vote on their favorites. The Top 10 will be revealed Aug. 1. The grand finale of the competition is Aug. 6 on Rosa Parks Circle, where a panel of judges will weigh in and crown a winner. Youll find a list of participating restaurants and descriptions of the sandwiches online at downtowngr.org/grandwich.

4. Ottawa County Fair. Spend some time in downtown Holland, visit the beach and then head out to the Ottawa County Fairgrounds, 1286 Ottawa Beach Road, for supercross, dirt drags, the Lost Nation Rodeo and the popular Wolverine Futurity harness racing. Activities begin Monday and continue through Saturday with a midway, childrens activities and more. Admission is $3. Find a complete schedule online at ottawacountyfair.com or call 399-4904 for more information.

3. Ionia Free Fair. Speaking of fairs, its time to head out to Ionia for some more fair fun, including a midway, grandstand entertainment, food and the return of the popular Ionia Idol competition. It continues through Saturday. There is no gate admission; parking is $6. More info: ioniafreefair.com.

2. Beach Boys Tribute. The Grand Rapids Symphonys Picnic Pops Series continues this week with performances at Cannonsburg Ski Area. Up next: Papa Doo Run Run playing music of the Beach Boys. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Gates open at 5:30. Lawn seats in advance are $14 adults, $12 seniors and students, $5 ages 2-15. All seats are $2 more on the day of the show. More info: grsymphony.org.

1. Taylor Swift. Shes grown up right before our eyes. A few years ago, she was performing (for free) at John Ball Park as part of Taste of Grand Rapids. Then, her diary songs caught fire and she rocketed to fame, had a run-in with Kanye West and started dating West Michigans favorite Twilight actor, Taylor Lautner. For most singers, that could be a career. But the 21-year-old superstar is launching into a new phase and is playing sold-out arenas and figuring out how to top her meteoric rise to fame. Im betting she has more surprises. She performs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Van Andel Arena. NeedToBreathe and Hunter Hayes open the show. Tickets are sold out, but some last-minute seats may become available. More info: VanAndelArena.com.
