Ted Hoge - Chattanooga Times Free Press

JASPER Robert Theodore "Ted" Hoge Jr., 77, of Simpsonville, S.C., died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, after a long illness.He was born April 1, 1934 in Chattanooga and spent his youth in Jasper, graduating from Marion County High School in 1953; he was a 1968 graduate of MTSU, Murfreesboro with a degree in English and Theater. Ted served in the U.S. Army in the 1960s stationed in Orleans, France. He and his family lived in West Palm Beach, Fla., for many years before moving to South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his father, Ted Hoge Sr.; and his mother, Lillie Harris Hoge, both of Jasper. In the 1950s and 1960s his mother and sister, Ann Hoge Kelly owned the Ann Hoge Florist in Jasper. Teds mother started the Jasper Public Library in the front of the flower shop and was the first librarian.Ted is survived by his wife, June Porterfield Hoge; daughter, Leslie Hoge (Rusty) Day; twin sons, Ted Hoge III and Tim Hoge, all of Simpsonville; three grandchildren, Jamie Day and Lindsay Day, of Tequesta Fla., and two great-grandchildren, Lilliana Marie Day and Joseph Bradley Thom; Ted was a very proud "Navy Grandpa" given the fact that his two grandsons serve(d) in the U.S. Navy. Also surviving are his sister, Ann Hoge Kelly of Jasper; nephews, Mark H. Kelly, of Jasper, Paul L. Kelly (Beverly), of Senoia Ga., and Rixey Kelly (Donna) of Birmingham, Ala. Ted will be greatly missed by his Marion County High School friends, especially DeArnold and Shirley Barnett and Billy Simpson, of Jasper; and a very special friend from the second grade, Chester Martin, of Chattanooga. Teds pioneer great-great-grandfather, Charles Foster settled the mountain area of Foster Falls, now a State Park near Tracy City. After retiring from a career in advertising sales, Ted followed his love of history and genealogy, researching and writing two books on the family histories of his maternal and paternal families as well as the Porterfield family, dating back to the 13th century in Ireland and Scotland.Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery, Anderson, S.C., conducted by Father Mike Schnatterly of the Church of the Good Shepherd. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Disabled Veterans, Chapter 1, Attention: Jerry Handley, 3510 Augusta Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
